Gabriela Kozyra (Brazilian Trio) at St Mary’s Church, Rotherhithe at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm), in partnership with Tuned In London
“A love note from a singer to Brazil” (Songlines). Originally from a Polish family of musicians of mainly vocal traditions, Gabriela Kozyra has a beautiful new album, recorded in Rio de Janeiro, where she immersed herself in the rich world of music-makers, some of whom, including the extraordinary guitarist and composer Guinga, contributed to this latest project. She invites us to discover Noites Brasileiras, her exquisite collection of unpublished Samba, Valsa, Choro and Marcha Rancho treasures from the new Brazilian songbook. “A Brazilian trip of the highest quality” to quote renowned Brazilian singer Monica Salmaso.
For more than 10 years Gabriela Kozyra has performed on the stages of European jazz festivals and jazz houses in London, where she lives. Gabriela graduated in jazz singing from The Royal Conservatoire of the Hague and holds a Master’s in Brazilian music from the Codarts Conservatoire in Rotterdam. In 2010, she had the opportunity to immerse herself in the vast universe of Brazilian music when she lived in Rio de Janeiro and studied samba at the Escola Portatil de Música. It is there she met many of the musicians and composers of the songs of her first album.
The album, recorded between July and August of 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, counts with the participation of the composers themselves as arrangers and instrumentalists. Among them is the extraordinary guitarist and composer Guinga, who plays guitar in the waltz Noites Brasileiras, which gave the title to the album and which he composed 50 years ago in partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro, and in Bordado de Rancho, a marcha rancho composed by Anna Paes and Vidal Assis. Although released in February this year, the opportunities to hear these songs live have been few.
We are delighted to be partnering again, for the second time, Tuned In London (www.tunedin.london) to present this concert.
